The steps outlined in the article below are the same steps that are covered in the video above.
This article will walk you through how to set up your SL MkIII with Ableton Live 10. Please ensure that your SL MkIII is connected to your computer and powered on.
If you are using a Mac, go to Preferences > Link MIDI. Then, select the SL MkIII as a control surface, and select the input and output to Novation SL MkIII (InControl).
If you’re using a PC, go to Option > Preferences > Link MIDI. Then, select the SL MkIII as a control surface, and select the input and output to Novation SL MkIII (MIDI2), which is how the InControl mode is displayed on PC.
To use the SL MkIII to control Ableton, configure the Track, Sync and Remote settings that you see on screen. For more information on these settings, we have linked to Ableton’s resource here, which walks you through the MIDI port settings: https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/209774205-Live-s-MIDI-Ports-explained
Please note that the ports may be named differently when setting up on a Windows operating system. The ordering should be similar to those seen in the video and screenshots above (Mac), but here is a list of how they may appear when comparing Mac to Windows:
Input Ports
- Novation SL MkIII MIDI = Novation SL MkIII MIDI
- Novation SL MkIII InControl = MIDI In 2 (Novation SL MkIII)
- Novation SL MkIII From DIN 1 = MIDI In 3 (Novation SL MkIII)
Output Ports
- Novation SL MkIII MIDI = Novation SL MkIII MIDI
- Novation SL MkIII InControl = MIDI Out 2 (Novation SL MkIII)
- Novation SL MkIII To DIN 1 = MIDI Out 3 (Novation SL MkIII)
- Novation SL MkIII To DIN 2 = MIDI Out 4 (Novation SL MkIII)
- Novation SL MkIII CV/Gate = MIDI Out 5 (Novation SL MkIII)
Once you’ve selected the InControl mode, you can control the following functions in Live 10:
- Sessions view clip launching
- Transport
- Volume faders
- Mute, solo, and pan
- Record enable
- Ableton device control
- Capture (New in Live 10)
