Applies to: Launchkey MK4 49/61
On Launchkey MK4 49/61, Shift + Fader Buttons 6-9 allow you to select Zones Part A, Part B, Split, and Layer.
We have created a project template for the following DAWs, which you can use to get familiar with Zones whilst following this guide:
- Ableton Live (11.3.22 or later)
- Logic Pro (11.0.0 or later)
- Cubase (13.0.41 or later), requires HALion Sonic 7
You can download these from the links at the bottom of this article.
The project template consists of two tracks:
- Track 1 (Bass, blue) set to listen to MIDI channel 1 (Part A)
- Track 2 (Pad, yellow) set to listen to MIDI channel 2 (Part B)
Ableton Live
Parts
Parts (Shift + Fader Button 6/7) let you split or layer the keys to send MIDI messages on different MIDI channels - this is useful for controlling different hardware or software instruments at the same time.
The MIDI channels for the two Parts (A and B) can be individually set in the Settings menu - by default, Part A will output on MIDI channel 1, and Part B will output on MIDI channel 2.
For example, if you have an instrument set to MIDI channel 1, you can play it using the keys whilst Launchkey is set to Part A (default). If you have a different instrument set to MIDI channel 2, you can switch to play that other instrument by switching to Part B (Shift + Fader Button 7).
In the project template, when both tracks are record-armed/enabled, the keys play Track 1 (Bass) when Part A is selected (Shift + Fader Button 6):
Likewise, the keys play Track 2 (Pad) when Part B is selected (Shift + Fader Button 7):
Split
Split (Shift + Fader Button 8) splits the keys between Part A and Part B, mimicking two separate keyboards - this is useful for playing two different instruments at the same time, mimicking the use of two separate keyboards.
Holding down Shift + Fader Button 8 (Split) lets you change the first note of Part B (Split Point, C3 by default) - the screen shows “Select Split Point” and pressing a key on the keyboard assigns it as the Split Point.
You can latch Shift by double-pressing the Shift button.
In the project template, when both tracks are record-enabled, with C3 set as the Split Point, the keys below the Split Point play Track 1 (Bass):
The Split Point and above keys play Track 2 (Pad):
Layer
Layer (Shift + Fader Button 9) lets you stack Part A and B together so that both Parts will play simultaneously when pressing the keys - this is useful for layering two different instruments together.
In the project template, the keys will play both Track 1 (Bass) and Track 2 (Pad) at the same time, as long as both tracks are record-enabled:

The template requires HALion Sonic 7 and Cubase 13.0.41 or later. The template is not tested or supported in earlier versions of Cubase.
