Applies to Launch Control XL 3
Please note that Launch Control XL3 has not yet been released, and therefore some features mentioned in this article may be subject to change.
Components can be used to manage and edit the fifteen Custom Modes stored on Launch Control XL 3, and to update the firmware.
Components is a tool used to manage the firmware and Custom Modes for many of our products. There are two versions of Components: the standalone application that you can install on your computer, or the web-based version that you can use in supported web browsers.
You can download the standalone version here:
Download Components Standalone
Alternatively, you can access our web-based version in browsers that support web MIDI such as Chrome, Opera, and Microsoft Edge from this link:
If you are using a browser, you may need to allow the page to access your MIDI devices, as prompted when first loading the page:
Opening Components and updating firmware
If you are using Launch Control XL 3 with a Windows PC, you'll need to install the Novation USB driver available from the downloads page: Launch Control XL 3 | Novation Downloads.
If a firmware update is available when you open Components, you will be prompted to update on the hub page before proceeding.
To start the firmware update, you will need to press the Play button on Launch Control XL 3 when prompted.
Once this is complete, or if no update is needed, click Manage Launch Control XL 3 to continue.
You can also check that the firmware is up-to-date by going to the user menu in the top right (or top left on smaller screens) of the Components window.
If you have any issues with updating the firmware, please see the steps in the following article: Updating firmware using Novation Components.
The connection status of the Launch Control XL 3 is indicated in the top right of the Components window:
Get Custom Mode from Launch Control XL
If you would like to edit one of the fifteen Custom Modes stored on Launch Control XL 3, select Get Custom Mode from Launch Control XL.
A dialogue will open enabling you to Select a Custom Mode to load into Components — if you're currently using a Custom Mode on Launch Control XL 3, it will appear with a small green dot.
Create a new Custom Mode
You can also create a new Custom Mode from scratch. Clicking Create Custom Mode will create a new Custom Mode identical to the default Mode 1.
Each Launch Control XL Custom Mode comprises assignments for the 24 encoders, 8 faders, and 16 fader buttons. In Components, the controls are labelled so you can see the message types and values assigned to them, along with the LED colours.
You can click on individual controls to edit their assignments. To edit multiple controls, you can click and drag, or use ⇧ Shift / ⌘ Command / ⌃ Control — this is useful for editing common controls, like MIDI channels or LED colours.
All controls can be configured with a name. When you use the control, the name will appear on the screen along with other relevant information for the control.
The LED colours for encoders and fader buttons can also be changed, with on and off colours configurable for the buttons.
Encoders and Faders
Encoders and faders can be set to output the following message types:
- Control Change (CC)
- NRPN (Non-Registered Parameter Number)
For both of these message types, you can set the relevant parameters, such as the minimum and maximum values — both message types support 7 or 14 bit resolution.
Fader Pickup
You can also select Pickup behaviour for each fader. This setting applies when Launch Control XL 3 is receiving MIDI feedback from the hardware or software you are controlling with it.
Jump: messages are sent immediately when you move the fader, causing the parameter to jump to the new value.
Pickup: messages are only sent once you move the fader to the position that matches the current parameter value.
Fader Buttons
The fader buttons can be set to output these message types:
- Note
- Control Change (CC)
- Program Change
- NRPN (Non-Registered Parameter Number)
- Keystroke
Parameters such as Note, Key Combination (Keystroke), Program Number (Program Change), and others specific to each message type can also be configured.
Button Behaviour
You can also adjust the button behaviour for the relevant message types.
Momentary: press to turn on and release to turn off.
Toggle: press once to turn on and again to turn off.
Trigger: immediately send the selected value.
Increment: increase the current value by 1.
Decrement: decrease the current value by 1.
Saving and Sending Custom Modes
When you're ready, the Custom Mode can be saved or sent to the Launch Control XL 3.
As well as saving within Components, Custom Modes can also be saved on your computer as .syx files by selecting Save → Download. You can load these .syx files into Components using the Upload Custom Mode button.
