This article looks at the options for using a Launchkey MK4 without a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as Ableton, Logic, and Cubase.
Set it up with standalone software
You can use Launchkey to play sounds in standalone software, such as the Orchestral Tools Sine Player (useful for piano or orchestral sounds). The setup process involves installing the software and setting the relevant outputs. You can redeem Orchestral Tools from your Novation account page once you have registered your Launchkey MK4.
Once installed, you can select the desired audio device, and the MIDI ports of your Launchkey should be set up automatically.
This allows to play instruments and pad/encoder/fader control via Custom Modes. Instruments are selected within the browser by double-clicking the desired sound:
Attached to this article is a Custom Mode you can use to change articulation and provide Sustain Control, and a Custom Mode for controlling the sounds with the encoders. You can read more about sending Custom Modes here.
Set it up with USB power and a MIDI cable to control a connected device
Launchkey MK4 sends MIDI data out of the MIDI output port, even if only receiving power through its USB connection.
The Launchkey MK4 range draws < 5V and up to ~200mA, with a maximum current draw is 1.25W. Most powered USB hubs or USB power supplies are able to power the Launchkey MK4 to use it for MIDI control of hardware synthesisers, grooveboxes, and similar.
Using a MIDI connection allows note control from keys and pads, control data from Custom Modes and clock data from the arpeggiator to be sent to the connected device.
To make the most of hardware control of connected devices, find out more about Custom Modes here.
